One afternoon this week while home following my nose, I thought "I'm happy!' and wondered why. There was no answer as there was nothing unusual happening. Just putzing around. There's shit going on around the world and in my personal life and I was having a happy day anyway. It was a treat.
I was drawing the Moon as she set in the east early and then revising a piece of writing for a read by a trusted pal next week. Feeling lucky to get to do these two things today. Reading you, hearing you, knowing your fingers likely have a touch of glue on them makes me happy. Just finished Claire Messud's The Woman Upstairs, recommended by Steve Almond in a class about desire, during which I also read Sarah Manguso's Liars, which if you haven't read, please do. It is a permission slip to rage in a way I have never read before. And the book I have loveloveloved this month is Megha Majumbar's The Burning. Love and hugs to you, sunny birdy day, s
Ooh, yay! I am ordering the book today - any opportunity I get to read your writing is a glorious thing
I am currently reading "Something in the Woods Loves You" by Jarod K. Anderson and "The Light Eaters" by Zoe Schlanger and busy teaching workshops on Grief & Rage and Rituals for Times of Crisis for folks to find ways to cope with this unreal reality. I'm also getting ready to launch a podcast series on Visions for a Radically Different World and all of that is giving me a sense of purpose and clarity in the midst of the bullshit and nonsense.
I would like to take your workshop on Grief and Rage!!! I was so filled with rage earlier this year. Now it is more just Grief....Not easy.... Keep up the good work!
How wonderful. Will order today. Reading Richard Power's new book: Playground, The Frozen River by Ariel Lawton and an astonishing book, Animal Life by an Icelandic author: Audur Ava Olafsdottir. Here is the beginning- "In 2013, Icelanders voted for the most beautiful word in their language. They chose a nine-lettered one, the job title of a health care worker; the Icelandic term for midwife: lyosmodir." What???? Earlier we had stumbled into a little independent bookstore in Brooklyn, I picked up the book because it was an Icelandic author and then read the first page after we got back to our flat, poking my daughter who was sleeping beside me (we were traveling). What a surprise. Books and writers of books. XOXOXOXOXOX I love you.
I am so happy to know you are content in this moment! May it expand and continue!!! I love watching birds in birdbaths!!! It sound Divine!! Sending you love! I don't have too much positive to add from here. I have had so much change in my life recently I am a bit off kilter. Praying for easier times ahead for all of us. Time has been helping me the most and excercing regularly and avoiding news....
Ooo Elizabeth I’ll be ordering that journal for sure! And thank you for the artistic recommendations, we must feed our souls, especially now, and I have to say it does my heart such good to imagine you there in a moment of contentment, watching the birds from your window, you the loveliest of canvasses for the changing light. Sending so much love to you and yours.
Wonderful news and congratulations on your prose publication.
I just finished reading The Mighty Red by Louise Erdrich, and as always, felt a great wave of gratitude for this writer and her thoughts and observations of human life.
Got my copy this morning and as always, I’m awed at how you put the words together so succinctly and beautifully. There’s several others in the journal that I can’t wait to get to. Whoever at the Carver School of Medicine came up with the idea of compiling these writings that touch on the medical world is a genius.
I had a conversation this morning with a group that was discussing the idea of holding space, in which I said I don't have any space to hold for anyone besides my kids and their mental health issues right now. "Depleted" is the word. Books keep slipping across my mind, but I did just read C.L. Polk's Witchmark and really enjoyed it. Another friend gave me C.S. Lewis's Until We Have Faces, about Cupid and Psyche, which isn't my usual kind of read and is holding my attention.
Ordered! Looking forward to the new Patti Smith also. May you enjoy many more moments of contentment. Just finished “Between Two Kingdoms” by Suleika Jaoud.
What a glorious treat to wake up to find your missive among the flood of stories in my morning cup of Substack. Your piece came in during an attempt to stay away from breaking news and such.
I have been boycotting the behemoth, so I will attempt to find the magazine elsewhere and if not successful will cross my personal line and order as suggested.
I have been rereading M Train, and have been struggling to finish reading Greg O’Brien’s On Pluto: inside the mind of Alzheimer’s. About to start listening to Patti Smith’s new memoir. Have listened to Ezra Klein’s interview with Patti several times; Very worth listening to even if not a fan of his.

That first page of "Dragon Mother" is beautiful and bittersweet.
What am I happy about right now?
Jack is learning to read.
I started a book club and our first meeting is tonight, they're the ladies from my pottery class.
Pottery. Clay makes me very happy.
My ex husband is helping with our trusteeship application for Miss Katie. (I know!)
Hugs, always hugs.
Had a glass of wine last night and it helped ease the sadness I felt yesterday.
Good on you, Elizabeth!

Always a pleasure when you “write in,” thank you.
Love light and peace to you
