Oh how I wish for a calm world, for all of us, for every mother and sister and brother and father and friend of such amazing special people like your Sophie.
I was introduced to Sophie by her mother when Sophie was a teenager. They are my friends. In the quiet circle of thought where we keep friends closest.
I've returned to this thread because I want to recommend 84 Charing Cross Road if you haven't already read it! Also there's a new book of short stories coming out in July called Patient Female, that I think you'd really like. It's by Julie Schumacher.
It’s possible our definition of “friend” might be too narrow. Does Sophie have friends? I think she does. She is beloved. Also, three sets of tulips is not, repeat is not, irresponsible. Your description of them alone has brought joy to my day. Joy is never irresponsible.
I think flowers are the perfect response to insanity. What upsets me the most about the wars in the Middle East, is people are more concerned about the price of gas than they are about the death and destruction.
Miss Katie turns 34 this summer, hard to believe. She has grey hairs now. Your Sophie is as beautiful as ever.
I am finding solace, as always, in the things that grow in my yard and all around. Whatever balm we can find for our souls right now as the world seems to tumble and fall over and over and over.
I remember when Sophie was still but a girl...her eyes sustaining you then, her eyes sustain you now, I am sure.

Thank you for that.
Enjoy your well-deserved wonderfully absurd tulips able to blossom in spite of this wondrously flawed human landscape.
Beautiful post. Three bunches of tulips. Why not.

I think when your daughter turns 31 you can buy as many tulips as you want.

Many thanks for your beautiful words and thoughts in these very turbulent times
You inspire me.
What would the world be without you and Sophie? Or the moments of quiet and calm? Or tulips? Sending love and gratitude.

Loving you both from afar.
Stoner blew me away. And I just re-read Salinger's Nine Stories. Wow that man could write!
