I’ve had these exchanges and remain speechless. It’s as if people can’t see any form of human well-being that isn’t reflected in GDP or the stock market. I keep asking—what exactly is the economy *for* then?

privilege. I despair lately. I too am bewildered. We have become a dystopian wildness, not wilderness, and I fear worse is on the way. How wise you are to keep your gaze on beautiful Sophie, and on your big hearted boys, too.

I don't know, Elizabeth. I just don't know--about anything anymore. Years ago when I lived in Santa Cruz, I would walk on the beach muttering, "I don't understand," which is about as effective as the crying of seagulls, but at least they get to make big noise. Thank you for your eloquence, your ability to express the inexpressible.

We all process things differently, I guess. We all SEE things differently, feel them differently, depending on a million different experiences and our own personalities. And of course- the news outlets we follow. Sigh.

I wonder what normal is anymore. Maybe we need a new normal; a normal where people care about each other and stop being selfish, where kindness is normal and we help each other.
