I think what the writer is saying is that we remember them now as Nazis, not for whatever justification they used. In the same way, he says, we will know the people who’ve supported Trump — not their reasons, but that they did.
I don't agree. I live in the Netherlands, and we've been educated during the decades after the war that there were many reasons why German civilians turned to become Nazis. Not because of evilness, more because a myriad of reasons, like fear, poverty, misinformedness, coercion etc etc etc. It lead to terrible consequences. The only lesson to learn was to always be aware for all the reasons that make people vote for a most extremist leader.
I think we both feel the same way, but I'm not reading his post in the way that you are. There are many people here who support Trump and have supported Trump, knowing full well the fears, economic uncertainties, etc. of others, but who most definitely DO NOT have those same fears. The people in his inner circle, for one, the Republicans that persist in supporting him despite despising him, etc. -- the many well-educated, economically secure people, those who despise Trump but who want to overturn Roe v. Wade, etc. I could go on. How I understood the writer of the post is that it is these people who are tying the knots and cementing their legacy. I'm not a believer in throwing around the word "evil," -- evil is banal and mediocre, as Arendt once wrote -- it's "binding knots."
Without caring for those reasons, without attending to the fears, those bonds are welded for eternity

I’m not sure why you keep disagreeing — that’s exactly what the writer is saying.
